Workshop of world forges new skills

A traditional German Christmas market was in full swing in the paved square by the old council house. Crowds of revellers, wrapped up against the chill November air, were tucking into bratwurst and gluhwein while an oompah band parped out a melody in the background.

This Teutonic scene was taking place in Birmingham, the second largest city in the UK and the seasonal home of the biggest German Christmas market in Britain.
