Sir, Both David Potter’s letter (November 8/9) and Andrew Morrison’s (November 22/23) regarding Roman parallels for the current crisis reminded me of what the historian, Charles A. Beard, wrote 60 years ago in The Republic : “The fortunes of ancient Rome have exercised a powerful influence over strong minds for at least fifteen hundred years”.
