It’s a wicked world for pubs that offer a quiet pint

The British pub, it seems, is in deep trouble. Pubs are closing at a rate of 40 a week, or nearly 4 per cent a year.

As a devotee of the institution, I take a personal interest in this. But the business case is also instructive. Recession apart, the industry has been squeezed by global forces, and the long-term outlook is bleak.
