BP has agreed with US regulators to pay $303m to settle charges that the company illegally manipulated propane prices in the US in 2004 by attempting to corner the market for the gas, a person familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

The settlement, to be announced by Thursday at the latest, involves a three-year agreement to abide by certain government-prescribed compliance measures in exchange for avoiding criminal prosecution.
