One of the most influential militant leaders from Nigeria’s oil region on Thursday emerged from the creeks of the Niger Delta to take part in an amnesty the government hopes will help ease unrest that has curbed production by at least one-third.
Ateke Tom was expected to make a public statement saying that he had accepted the government’s offer of cash and allowances in exchange for an amnesty, a plan intended to persuade militants to lay down their weapons and accept an amnesty intended to halt violence in the oil-producing Niger Delta.
