As Venezuela steps into the limelight on Tuesday to host the Copa América for the first time, President Hugo Chávez is eager for world attention to remain firmly focused on South America’s main international football tournament.
But a student movement and other opposition groups threaten to divert attention by continuing civil rights protests that have taken place since the opposition-backed RCTV television station went off the air a month ago. Mr Chávez refused to renew its licence – accusing it of backing a failed coup against him in 2002.
