Uribe is undeterred by rising levels of Farc violence

An upsurge in deadly armed attacks by Colombian rebels has put President Alvaro Uribe on a defensive footing this week as he seeks to dispel fears over the significance of a major guerrilla counter-offensive.

More than 50 soldiers and at least a dozen civilians have been killed in the past three weeks as a result of a series of bomb attacks and ambushes by left-wing insurgents in several regions of Colombia.
