Oxford University’s controversial animal laboratory has opened two years later than planned, after its delay by protests and a campaign of intimidation.

Its completion has been seen as a test of Britain’s commitment to standing up to animal rights extremists, with the government helping to meet extra costs imposed by security requirements.
