Japan business sentiment at four-year low

Business sentiment at large Japanese manufacturers has fallen to a four-year low, though the drop is not as steep as has been typical in previous recessions.

The Bank of Japan’s influential Tankan survey shows an across-the-board deterioration in confidence. Companies are planning to pare back capital spending more sharply than at any time since 2002 and are predicting that profits will fall for the first time since Japan’s recovery began six years ago.
