Microsoft’s decision to make a leap into open computing by disclosing more information about its software has a clear motive. After years of fighting a losing battle against regulators over its practices, it wants a respite from legal action.
The European Commission intends to look this gift horse in the mouth. Microsoft’s past foot-dragging and implausible claims that it it could not do what regulators wanted not only wore out its welcome in Brussels but created scepticism about its tactics.
