Gulf states wary of Iran's charm offensive

Eight days in the Middle East is a long trip for a US president. But George W. Bush's sudden burst of personal engagement cannot beat the active diplomatic pace of his principal opponent - Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadi-Nejad.

One of Mr Bush's objectives as he moved to the Gulf last night was to challenge Iran and underline America's commitment to a military and political presence in the oil-rich region.
