Trade finance needs help, says minister

Regulators must amend global rules to encourage banks to finance international commerce and business growth rather than risky trading, according to Lord Davies, the trade minister.

Lord Davies, who joined the government in January after serving as chief executive and then chairman of Standard Chartered, is this week launching a plan for the Export Credit Guarantee Department, the UK’s export credit agency, to back private banks offering “letters of credit” to companies trading abroad.
