McCain close to victory but doubters remain

John McCain had built such high expectations before Super Tuesday that there was a palpable sense of anticlimax at his victory rally in Phoenix as it became clear he could not yet declare the Republican presidential race over.

But while his victory was not as emphatic as he predicted just days earlier, the Arizona senator had taken another decisive step towards his party’s nomination. The only remaining doubt appeared to be when, not if, he would seal the deal.
