Spectre of enlargement haunts the EU

If you judge the popularity of a club by the size of the queue outside the door, the European Union should be entering 2005 in a spirit of bullish optimism.

But Europe does not do optimism. Instead, the prevailing mood is one of uncertainty and, in some quarters, scarcely concealed dread.
