North Korea missile launch condemned

Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader, ignored protests from world leaders yesterday by firing a long-range missile over Japan just hours before Barack Obama, US president, gave a major address calling for a "world free of nuclear weapons".

"With this provocative act, North Korea has ignored its international obligations, rejected unequivocal calls for restraint and further isolated itself from the community of nations," Mr Obama said.
