EU tells Britain to rein in ‘excessive’ deficit

Britain was told on Tuesday by European Union finance ministers to bring its “excessive” budget deficit within EU limits within a year, amid signs that France and Germany are finally taming their own high public borrowing.

Gordon Brown, Britain’s chancellor of the exchequer, did not travel to Brussels for the Ecofin council meeting, where his handling of the UK’s public finances was criticised by other EU members.
