Olmert to leave office in two months

Ehud Olmert finally succumbed to the string of corruption investigations that have tarnished his tenure as Israeli prime minister, announcing on Wednesday that he would step down from his post within the next two months.

The move ends months of uncertainty and speculation, but at the price of plunging Israel into a political succession battle at a time of high tension and frantic diplomatic activity in the Middle East.
