From Mr Adrian Nastase.

Sir, Your article "Romania faces $100m corruption suit" (May 2), containing very serious accusations concerning corruption acts allegedly committed by officials working for my cabinet in 2001-02, caused me shock and dismay. Even though I have serious doubts as to the authenticity of the alleged audio tape referred to in your article, I will refrain from commenting upon it as it is in the power of the competent courts to pass judgment on this matter. However, I would like to clarify once and for all that I am not aware of any illegal acts of the Romanian government or of members of any governmental agency being perpetrated in relation with the business of Eastern Duty Free company.
