Monetary easing takes a variety of forms

Unconventional easing is the new frontier in central banking, as monetary authorities push beyond near-zero interest rates in their efforts to battle the crisis.

In the past month the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, the Swiss National Bank and the Federal Reserve have all taken bold steps that involve creating money to buy assets.
