Surprise rate rise failed to cool housing market

The Bank of England's surprise summer rise in interest rates failed to cool the housing market, according to a closely watched report.

The average price of a home was £169,413 in September, up 1.3 per cent on the previous month and the fastest pace of inflation since January, said Nationwide, the building society.
