When Jayaram Bhat came to California’s Silicon Valley to work for Intel in 1980, he remembers there being not a single Indian restaurant on the peninsula in which to enjoy a curry after work.

“Now there’s an Indian restaurant nearly every half-mile,” he says, reflecting not an American adoption of the subcontinent’s cuisine but an invasion by hungry Indian engineers and entrepreneurs of the heartland of US technology.
