The outcome of the second vote in the House of Representatives on the bail-out package this week will largely hinge on the ability of the Republican leadership to regain control over its increasingly unruly caucus.
It will also depend on whether Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic House speaker, can ensure she will not suffer any defections from the 140 Democrats who voted for the original rescue package, even though the revised legislation has been designed to draw in more Republicans.
