Mandelson wants revamp of EU state aid rules

Europe risks becoming a bystander on a world stage increasingly dominated by the US and China unless it demonstrates stronger leadership and reshapes its economic policies to encourage innovation in green technologies, Lord Mandelson, the UK business secretary, is to warn in an address on Friday.

As part of that effort, Lord Mandelson will call for a loosening of the European Union’s state aid rules in order to encourage investment in the low-carbon industries of the future, according to a copy of his remarks obtained by the Financial Times.
