Alistair Darling vowed on Tuesday to restore “strong and stable public finances” to underpin Britain’s recovery, amid growing cabinet tension over the scale of future curbs on spending on schools, hospitals and other key services.

Mr Darling, addressing the City at Mansion House, warned that there were “tough choices ahead”, adding that he planned to halve Britain’s deficit in four years to help ensure a sustained recovery.
