Nepal opposition parties call strike

The seven allied political parties challenging King Gyanendra’s direct rule in Nepal have declared a nationwide strike on Thursday to protest against a ban on peaceful demonstrations and the arrest of their leaders last week.

The strike is timed to prevent candidates who are contesting the February 8 municipal elections from filing nomination papers, due on Thursday.
