It is not often one gets to paraphrase John McEnroe and Humphrey Bogart in the same sentence but the stock market's recent gyrations have provided me with this unique opportunity. Here goes: "Investors cannot be serious. Of all the sectors in all the towns, in all the world, they buy US banks".

That's right, this week we were treated to the unusual spectacle of a rise in financial stocks.
