Labour MPs told to ‘show backbone’

Gordon Brown’s closest political ally issued a rebuke to Labour MPs plotting to remove Gordon Brown on Sunday, urging them to show “some backbone”, amid continuing speculation that the premier could face a leadership challenge in September.

Ed Balls, schools secretary, told the BBC: “What we have got to show is the strength, the discipline, the backbone as a political party to do what the public wants.”
