Villagers test Nigeria's ability to hold peaceful election

Villagers in a remote corner of south-west Nigeria voted yesterday in a state governorship election that is being seen as a test of the country's ability to overcome its history of pollrelated violence.

In the past few weeks, attempts to re-run the disputed gubernatorial poll in Ekiti State have been marked by clashes between groups of supporters and a mysterious 24-hour disappearing act by a top election official.
