Chancellor in no rush to hail UK recovery

City economists might believe the economic contraction has come to an end but the Treasury remains cautious about declaring premature victory over the recession.

Aides to Alistair Darling, the chancellor, have been watching the data carefully and acknowledge, with some relief, that they have improved considerably.
