US looks to UK to take more Guantánamo detainees

The US would welcome an offer from the British government to provide a home for some of the detainees that have been earmarked for release from Guantánamo Bay, according to a senior US official.

Britain this week asked the Bush administration to return five UK residents who have been held at the Guantánamo detention camp. Sandra Hodgkinson, the new deputy assistant secretary of defence for detainee affairs, said the Pentagon would appreciate help from the UK to find homes for some of the other detainees as London and Washington negotiated over the five British residents.
