Clinton in pragmatic mood for China visit

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, said on Friday that disputes with China over human rights should not derail talks on key issues such as the financial crisis and climate change where there was a chance of making progress.

Speaking en route to Beijing on Friday night, Mrs Clinton said she would raise controversial topics with her Chinese counterparts in Beijing today but recognised that both governments had well-known views that were unlikely to change in the short term.
