The UK and Russia tried to heal a rift in relations on Monday as David Miliband, the British foreign secretary, and Sergei Lavrov, his Russian counterpart, emphasised a positive mood during the first visit to Moscow by a UK foreign secretary in five years.

“This series of meetings is a chance to add depth and drive to our relationship,” Mr Miliband told Mr Lavrov at a joint press conference in Moscow.
