Business leaders on Monday urged politicians to toughen their approach to public sector pay after both main parties fought shy of an across-the-board freeze for 6m state employees.

Downing Street made clear that, in spite of warnings of tighter pay awards in future by Alistair Darling, the chancellor, there were no plans to reopen multi-year pay deals with public sector workers.
