Canadian PM calls October election

Stephen Harper, Canadian prime minister, dissolved parliament yesterday, calling a vote for next month that will focus largely on an increasingly uncertain economy.

Mr Harper had hinted that he would call an election, arguing his government, which holds a minority of seats in the House of Commons, required a stronger mandate to respond to the economic struggles.
