Councils to be given bigger role in planning health services

Local government is to be given a significant role in planning health services for the first time in more than 30 years, under an amendment the government is to table today to its local government bill.

Primary care trusts are to be given a statutory duty to work with local councils to produce a local health needs assessment covering public health and primary and community care.
