Chirac will not resign if vote lost

President Jacques Chirac on Thursday night ruled out the possibility that he would resign if French voters ignored his advice and rejected Europe's constitutional treaty in a referendum on May 29.

But Mr Chirac warned that a No vote would halt Europe's political integration, weaken Paris's influence in the world and turn the country into the “black sheep” of Europe.
