China sets up party leadership reshuffle

China’s Communist party has cleared the way for the appointment of a new senior leadership group following the retirement of a powerful vice-president and two other members of the nine-strong politburo inner circle.

Zeng Qinghong, the vice-president, and the fifth-ranked leader, was not among the members of the new central committee selected by the 2,200-odd delegates at the closure on Sunday of the five-yearly party congress.
