The conflict between Israel and Hamas took a bloody turn for the worse yesterday, when a rocket fired by the Islamist group killed a civilian in Israel for the first time in nine months, raising the prospect of further military escalation.

An Israeli airstrike had earlier killed five Hamas members travelling in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian death toll rose further when a second airstrike killed at least four more Gazans later in the day.
