Mixed reception for CDU manifesto points to snags ahead

Economists and political allies gave Angela Merkel's manifesto a mixed reception yesterday, suggesting the Christian Democratic Union leader could face difficulties implementing her policies should she become German chancellor after elections scheduled for September.

The Free Democratic party, the CDU's likeliest coalition partner, categorically rejected Ms Merkel's plan to raise value-added tax from 16 to 18 per cent.
