Inquiry opens wider questions on political bias

The repercussions of the Charity Commission's continuing inquiry into the Smith Institute could stretch far beyond the think-tank.

Any finding by the regulator against the institute could be an embarrassment for Gordon Brown, given his links to the think-tank. But it could also open up wider questions about the charitable status of other think-tanks that work on political issues, operating in what experts describe as a largely untested area of charity law.
