Shipping index rise points to strong demand

Commodities prices on Monday were mixed, with oil consolidating above $76 a barrel and tin rising to a fresh all-time high amid another volatile day in the credit markets.

Market fundamentals stayed strong, with the Baltic Dry Index, the best gauge of bulk shipping costs, on Monday rising to a fresh all-time high of 6,936 points, up 0.7 per cent on the day. The index has hit record highs in the past five trading sessions.
