Manufacturing: The long road from coal and steel to high-technology

The Welsh economy was built on coal and steel. Its large manufacturing sector has been on the road to diversification since the 1970s – but that journey needs to move up a gear as the recession takes its toll.

Manufacturing employs a fifth of the workforce and contributes £7.5bn ($12.2bn) of added value to the economy – about 18 per cent.
