Rail chief urges caution on competition

The chairman of Spain’s state-owned train operator has argued strongly for the company to retain its monopoly over many aspects of train operation as it recovers from recession and non-payment of promised government subsidies.

Teofilo Serrano said in a Financial Times interview that Renfe was “perfectly aware” that in the future its market would have to be opened to competition. However, it would need some time to prepare.
