Brown forced to net in by-election test

Gordon Brown’s woes continued to grow on Sunday, as he faced a perilous by-election, the resignation of Labour’s leader in Scotland and a cabinet minister comparing him to a tennis player reluctant to play on Centre Court.

Mr Brown might have hoped that Labour’s fifth-place in the Henley by-election last week and the political obituaries that accompanied his first anniversary as prime minister marked the nadir in his fortunes.
