Continuous development: Keeping managers sane and ahead of the game

Training courses and promotions are only part of the management development toolkit. Experience is an important factor and managers must be helped to improve their performance by stretching them as they work. Approaches include coaching and mentoring, but organisations are finding innovative new ways to develop management skills.

The importance of experience is shown by a comparative study of the capability of managers in Germany Norway, Spain and the UK carried out by the Institute for Employment Studies for the Sector Skills Development Agency. It showed that innate ability and job experience are considered the most important factors in the creation of a good manager.
