Capture of sailors steps up nuclear tensions

When the 15 British sailors and marines were seized in the northern Gulf on Friday the only small source of comfort was that a similar incident in June 2004 had been quickly resolved. At that time, eight British sailors were blindfolded, paraded on television and subjected to mock executions, but they were safely returned within the days.

The comparison is only partly helpful, however, because the political context today is radically different.
