Abdelaziz Bouteflika on Thursday said he would seek a third term as Algerian president in elections in April in which he is expected to face only weak competition.

“I announce my candidature as an independent,” the president told a crowd of cheering, flag-waving supporters at a rally in central Algiers. “The people have the right to choose in all freedom.”
