Overview: Turmoil follows Fed’s Bear rescue

Financial markets were engulfed in fresh turmoil on Monday following the weekend bail-out of Bear Stearns, the US investment bank, and the announcement by the Federal Reserve of new measures to boost liquidity.

Global stock markets were hit hard in early trade, although Wall Street bounced from its lows, and the dollar plunged as money markets virtually froze. That sent nervous investors scrambling for the safe havens of government bonds and gold.
