Democrats back nominee for law chief

Democrats on Wednesday leapt to the defence of Eric Holder, Barack Obama’s pick for attorney-general, as Republicans geared up for a fight over the nomination.

Mr Holder, former deputy attorney-general in the administration of Bill Clinton, is facing a bruising confirmation hearing next week, amid Republican doubts over his political independence.
