Chinese thirst buoys SAB

Thirsty labourers who leave China’s coastal cities to return to their hometowns in the interior are bringing a taste for beer back with them, according to SABMiller, the London-listed brewer.

Lager volumes in China grew 17 per cent in the three months to the end of June, with the strongest growth coming from China’s central regions, as the souring employment markets in many of the country’s former industrial boomtowns force beer-drinking workers to return home. SABMiller’s Chinese Snow brand is now the largest-selling beer brand in the world.
